A kid who is a pitcher is drafted by MLB out of either high school or college.

How do teams decide which is the best pitching position for him? I mean what do they look for in deciding if he'll be a starter versus a long reliever or a short reliever or a closer?

  1. At first, it usually depends on stamina and pitch types.

If a pitcher only has 2 pitches he can control and throw for strikes, then he will start as a middle reliever most likely. Once he develops and can control 3-4 pitches, and builds up arm strength, he will probably go from long reliever to starter once they feel he is ready. (Ex. Joba Chamberlain)

  2. They watch his progress in the minors. High picks are usually projected as starters though but sometimes guys like Ryan Wagner are drafted as RPs.
