I am going to Syracuse NY from Union Square NYC and I was thinking about taking the Holland Tunnel on Friday around 6 PM. I hear the traffic is horrible in the tunnel at that time and I was wondering if it would be faster to take another route? Any other route Ideas?

  1. I used to live on Long Island...and didn't travel through the city too much because of the craziness, but I did listen to the radio stations a lot during the evenings on my LONG rides home.

The Holland Tunnel can run anywhere from a 20 minute wait to an hour and a half wait. The George Washington bridge can be the same. However, I noticed that sometimes either one or the other would be a longer wait. I would definately start listening to the traffic reports before you head out to see what the scoop is with accidents/construction.

  2. 6 PM leaving the city all routes (rotflmao) STINK !!! Listen to the traffic reports. on AM radio 1010 , 880, 1130.  I would be more inclined to take the Lincoln tunnel to the Jersey turnpike north into 80 west, then 80 west to 380 in Pa to 81 north.

Or the GW to rt 4 west to 17 north to Binghamton then 81 north.

    Good Luck

  3. My friend, at 6pm on a Friday, traffic can be bad at the Holland. My advice, take the West Side Highway to the GWB and then take the GWB to I-80.

The link below has a mapped out route from Union Square to Syracuse.

    Good luck
