Against New England
Chiefs travelled to New England to play the Patriots, who would go on to win the American Football Conference (AFC) title.
With quarterback, Matt Cassel, out with an injury, Tyler Palko got his first start, which was not a memorable one.
The backup quarterback ended up throwing three interceptions. He completed 24 passes of 37 attempts for 230 yards and received a passer rating of 49.9.
He said after the game:
"Three interceptions is inexcusable. The game is hard enough as it is without making mistakes."
Besides the interceptions, Palko’s stats were impressive. He said:
“All in all, I felt pretty confident. Obviously, there's a few things I'd like to have back."
In the first quarter, Chiefs’ defence created all sorts of troubles for Patriots’ offence.
Chiefs scored a field goal in the quarter, but that was their only scoring move.
Patriots got a touchdown and a field goal in the second quarter to enter the halftime carrying a seven-point lead.
Patriots managed two touchdowns and a field goal in the third quarter and extended the lead by scoring a touchdown in the final.
The final score settled at 34-3.
Against Pittsburgh Steelers
In the absence of Cassel, Palko failed to prove himself as the perfect replacement.
In his second game as starter, he once again failed to score a touchdown and his inaccuracy resulted in three interceptions. He got a passer rating of 40.9 for the game.
Chiefs started well by scoring a field goal in the first quarter.
However, Steelers got one touchdown and two field goals in the second quarter, where Chiefs only got one field goal.
After the scoreless third quarter, Chiefs managed another field goal in the final quarter, but they were still four points short.
The final score settled at 13-9.
At Chicago
Chiefs had done well to recover from the slump early in the season, but they went down again and badly hurt their chances.
Out of 10 games, they had only won four.
Thankfully, the game against Chicago Bears brought some respite to them.
It was a low-scoring game where Chiefs’ defensive strength was evident. The Bears were restricted to scoring only a field goal and that too in the second quarter.
Chiefs managed a touchdown and a field goal to seal the victory.
At New York Jets
The Chiefs still had chances, but they needed to win games to guarantee their place in the postseason.
The offence, which did not click for most part of the season, was dull against New York Jets and the unpredictability of the defence continued to torment Chiefs.
In the first quarter, Jets got a touchdown and Chiefs managed a field goal.
Jets’ intense aggression in the second quarter was hard to control as they scored three touchdowns.
They added another touchdown in the third while Chiefs were still searching for another scoring move.
In the final quarter, Chiefs eventually managed a touchdown, but that did not even provide consolation as Jackie Battle got tackled by Sione Pouha in Chiefs’ end zone, giving two more points to Jets.
The final score settled at 37-10.
Palko, who was sacked five times during the game, was falling short of excuses. He said:
"The Jets put a lot of pressure (on you). That's just what they do. They're a lot like the Steelers. They have guys all over the place."
