At San Diego
After two miserable defeats, the Chiefs finally managed to improve their game as both the defence and offence performed relatively well against San Diego Chargers, but that game-play was still not enough to give the Chiefs their first victory of the season.
After the scoreless first quarter, Chargers got the first scoring move of the game in the second quarter.
Chargers collected 10 points in the quarter, while the Chiefs were still searching for their first scoring move.
Chiefs’ quarterback, Matt Cassel, finally managed to initiate a scoring drive and found Dwayne Bowe from four yards to get a touchdown, which was followed by a touchdown from Chargers.
Chiefs collected 10 points in the final quarter with Cassel managing another touchdown, but Chargers also got a field goal in the quarter.
The final scored settled at 20-17.
Against Minnesota Vikings
Cassel had started to find his rhythm, which coupled with some smart play from the quarterback and the offensive coordinator, earned Chiefs their first victory of the season.
The Chiefs were finding hard to reach the end zone and score touchdowns in the previous games and decided to rely more on field goals against Vikings.
They started the game by scoring a field goal in the first quarter, but the lead was soon taken away by the Vikings, who scored a touchdown.
In the second quarter, Chiefs managed two field goals while the defence did its job brilliantly to prevent the opponents from getting any scoring move.
Chiefs managed two more goals in the third quarter while Vikings could only get one field goal in the quarter.
Both the teams scored a touchdown each in the final quarter as the final score settled at 22-17.
Cassel completed 18 of 29 attempted passes for 260 yards and sent a touchdown to receive a passer rating of 102.7.
During the game, the quarterback had some heated conversation with coach, Todd Haley, as well, but the victory cheered everyone up.
The coach said after the game:
"Matt and I and a number of others who really, passionately care about trying to make this team special, you're going to have some emotion and feeling. Like I said, Matt, great response, and how he played, and that's No. 1. That's all that matters."
At Indianapolis
After getting their first victory of the season, the Chiefs faced the Indianapolis Colts, who had not won any game yet.
This was the perfect opportunity for Chiefs to build on the momentum gained earlier and stretch the winning run, and they did exactly that.
The Colts, who were missing the veteran quarterback, Peyton Manning, started the game well, but could not control Chiefs’ late aggression.
After the first quarter, Colts were leading with a touchdown. The lead was increased by 10 points early in the second quarter.
Chiefs got their first scoring move when Colts were 17 points ahead.
Cassel and Bowe combined for a 41-yard touchdown, which was followed by a touchdown from Colts.
Near the halftime, Cassel and Steve Breaston combined for a 16-yard touchdown to reduce the deficit as the halftime score settled at 24-14.
Still trailing by 10 points, Chiefs came out on the field in the third quarter with the defence fully charged up.
Chiefs scored a touchdown in the quarter and managed another in the final while the Colts failed to score in the second half.
Chiefs won the game, 28-14.
Cassel completed 21 of 29 attempted passes for 257 yards and sent four touchdown passes receiving a passer rating of 138.9.
