How Long Are College Application Essays Supposed To Be?

On the common application it says that the minimum is 250 words but what is the maximum. Can anyone give me a specific number?

There is no maximum, but they don;t want to read a book. The average is probably about 2 pages. Be sure to double space and put two spaces after a period! Make sure that your writing is strong. Get your English teacher to read over it before you submit it. Good Luck!

Most readers won't want to read an essay over a page and a half.  My teacher said to do double the minimum, so that would be 500 words.
