Question:

How Long Do I Wait To Handle My Banded Water Snakes After Feeding?

by  |  earlier

I'm getting two babies and I know that they are naturally aggressive snakes and I've never owned a snake before and aside from my (recently acquired) iguana I've never owned a reptile either. I'm a little clueless on handling as well. I know to stay away from the head but what else? I'm not afraid to get bit, I've been around playful large dogs, cats and angry birds my entire life. So, can anyone help me with these questions? Also if you'd be so kind as to answer my other question I'd be very grateful.

Thanks in advance!

  1. These snakes prefer to eat as other species do - a filling meal, and then resting to digest.

    You're feeding them daily?  Hmmm

I'd bite you too, if I was in a state of "eat" 24/7.

How are you housing this reptile, what are you feeding it, and how often?

This is not a dog or cat, and much like a turtle, it will feel insecure out of the water.  A water snake bite means bleeding.  They have an anticoagulant in their saliva...

This is not a beginner snake to make mistakes with.

I wish I could give you 'two thumbs up,' and wish you well.  But, it's obvious that you have no clue about these reptiles, and have not done your  research.

It's fine to ask answers here out of curiosity.  It's another matter to not learn about the reptile you DO have coming, and to attempt to use this forum for care.

Don't take the snakes.  You have much to learn first, to be a GOOD onwer.

I'm not here for the 10 pts.  I'm here to help in what little way I can.  It is obvious that you have no clue how to handle the snakes.

Banded water snakes are not the place to start.

You cannot be a good owner if you know nothing of their habits, personality/traits, and needs.

I liked your additional comment.  IT shows that you are not an idiot, and are willing to learn.

Take my advice, and forget the water snakes for now.  Do research, and get one when you are up to the task.

I don't mean to belittle, quite the opposite.  Be responsible and be educated.  This is not a 'starter snake.'

    Good luck, whatever you decide.

I hope this has been helpful.
