  1. There is no rule of thumb.  Ya just got to reasonable about it.  The logic of 1 inch of fish/1 gallon of water...if you were to put a 12 inch fish in your 12 Gallon tank...then your fish would have hardly any room to swim and barely any room to turn around.   And a lot of it depends on the filter you have...if you have a great filter thats a bit over whats called for...then you will provide better conditions for your fish.

A better question to answer is what kind of fish do you like?

You have a number of possibilities.

A school of Tetras are your best bet...with a school of bottom dwellers like certain loaches and cory cats.

And you could probably add on "feature" fish...like a Dwarf Gourami or a Betta.

Unfortunately with you tank...stay away from Angels, Barbs, reg. Gourami, Bala Shark, Pleco...and the such...these fish need bigger tanks.

    All in all

a school of 6 neons or 5 redeyes

    3 cory cats

    1 dwarf Gourami

and your set...but of course you can change the species around to what you like within the parameters you have with a 12 Gallon Tank.

    Best of Luck!

  2. normally the rule of thumb for a personal fish tank is 1 inch. of fish to 1 gal. of water. So if the fish you are looking at only get 2inches when they are fullgrown then you can have up to 6 fish. you want to make sure thy have room to swim and get away from the other fish if they want, b/c not all fish get along!

P.S. Unless you are trying to keep feeder fish or bait fish, the 40 that lizard suggested is NOT  even close......

  3. more than 5 but less then 40. so aroun 20, or 25
