I have a female 10 weeks old yorkshire terrier x jack russel. Shes the runt of the litter, so we're unsure about the amount of food we should be giving her daily. Could anyone tell me how many times a day and how big a portion. Thanks :)

  1. The first answer is totally correct.

  2. 3x per day

  3. You need to remember that puppies have very small tummies (extremely small in your case!) so the meals should be of a little amount and often. As a rough guide about 4 small meals a day. As to the amount, the packet or the vet will tell you but just because she's the runt it doesn't mean you have to feed her any larger amount - she'll catch up!  As she gets a bit older, you can cut the meals down to 3 and then 2 and maybe down to 1 if she's not a very hungry dog. Dogs only really need 1 meal at a regular time or sometimes 2 if the amount is being left. However the same daily amount just needs to be divided over the course of the day.

    Good luck.

  4. I have a yorkie, but I've had small dogs for 20 years, and I have always had an open bowl, one for the food and one for water.

Never gave any of my dogs any other food than the one I purchased - (vet suggested) for the certain dog I had...I always felt, if the dog got sick, I knew it was nothing different I had fed it.

This procedure has also worked for me, and my vet has always commented, on how he wished more people would do this...

Just thought I pass on this information.

    Enjoy your new addition.

  5. 3 times a day, my pups feed that, and have been very healthy dogs at full grown

  6. Puppies that young should be free-fed. Once they hit the four month mark (16 weeks) you should feed them three times a day. Once they hit the five month mark (20 weeks) they should be fed twice a day.

I'd have to know how much she weighs to give you an accurate amount, but I'd say a cup of kibble or less a day. Mine get 24 ounces of kibble a day. they're 6 months old and 25 pounds.

  7. pups can be greedy and will eat until they are so full they vomit. they need about 1/2 cup of food every 4 to 6 hours or about 5 times a day. small amounts are better and make sure there is plenty of fresh water all the time.i had 6 pups and i mixed up puppy chow with warm water and canned pup meat and fed them morning, noon and dinner then a little snack at bedtime, they were border collie mixes so a little bigger than ur pup.cut the amount back after a few weeks and try 3 times a day then twice and leave a little bowl of dry for snack time and he will get use to the routines. make sure u have him dewormed from the vet for the right meds for his size and weight.good luck with ur new baby

  8. I would feed her every 3 - 4 hours at first. Watch for hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) as it can be fatal. If she starts showing the symptoms of it rub some nutrical or karo syrup on her gums. If that does not work bring her to the vet.
