  1. how much did your other turle cost? That should tell you. Go to a pet shop

  2. A box turtle be great unless you have lots of $$$$

I have  had 2 red eared sliders for 36yrs!!! I got them when I was 18 and NEVER expected to out live the statistics of only living for 25 yrs.

And they have cost me TONS $$$$.  Lots of feeders at least 100 a month and romaine and butter lettuce 5 times a week and tubiflex cubes 3  to 4 times a week.

If you don't start out with a 100 gal tank and or pond you will be buying tank after tank and filter after filter to take care of them as they can grow to 10 to 12"..If the water is NOT clean they are very susceptable to sickness and need to bask in sunlight or rep lite for at least 8 to 10 hrs a day..

I have had mine in a stand alone 150gal pond from sears..for about 6 yrs now..

Finding a vet is most difficult  so here is a link for all herpes..   “herpetologicalsocieties.com, for a turtle vet in your city and state.

  3. The price of turtles vary considerably depending on the species.  Some are very cheap (under $10) and others you just don't want to know what they cost.

For beginners Painted turtles (especially southern) are good choices.  Here are some care sheets on a bunch of species:

Turtles do not experience love and companionship the same way we or other animals do.  Turtles are happy so long as their environment and food sources are good.  Turtles will tolerate other turtles in their homes, but sometimes  turtles don't get along and have to be separated.

My painted turtles "beg" for food every time I come near the tank so if you'd like to translate that as they are happy to see me, then cool.

No turtle is guaranteed not to run away if you don't keep it in a proper enclosure.  Additionally, turtles don't generally like to be handled.  They should be considered "look at" pets rather than pick up and touch pets.  It's usually best to leave them in their enclosure and only handle if absolutely needed so they feel safe and secure.

  4. Turtles cost a lot of money.

And they dont like to be loved, just left alone.

but if you REALLy want one... go to this site- http://www.austinsturtlepage.com

Painted turtles are great to start out with and so are map turtles.

  5. I would go with anything other than water turtles. they are high maint.

  6. A great turtle for a beginner is my personal favorite, the mississsippi map turtle.  They are very pretty turtles that bond pretty well with their owners. I know mine did.  They do well in pairs or alone. A male reaches 5 inches long, a female will reach over 9 inches long. They cost about 20 dollars per turtle. For one male turtle a 30 gallon is needed. For 2 males a 50 is needed.  They feed on crickets and pellet foods high on vitamin a and calcium.  They require a filter, a uv lamp,  an underwater heater, vet care if needed, and a place big enough for them to get out of the water and dry off.  Turtles (especially mississippi maps) require clean water at all times.  The tank should be completely clean at least once a week.  All this is vital to having a healthy happy turtle. If a clean environment is not provided they will fall sick and if not treated immediately they will die. Turltes react differently to sickness than we do. Once they get sick it is hard for them to get better.  If you do not think you can provide all that is listed above please do not get one for the sake of the turtle. These are not animals that can be placed in a plastic tub outside and thrown a slice of lettuce every other day. If poor care is given they will die. They require a ton of attention and care.  But if you think you can provide all of this and learn from previous mistakes then go for the rewarding job of being a turtle owner.
