They don't make a lot.  Even a busy gas station that sells coffee, cigarettes, donuts, drinks, candy, etc. does not make much in profit for the owner.  That's why a lot of guys own 5 or 6 stations to really make money at it.  Google it and you will see reports.

They make about 5 cents per gallon.

So big stations will still make no money. They money on the coffee and the snacks.

The gas station where we usually stop makes about about 2.2 cents a gallon. Like many other gas station/convenience stores, the idea is to get the customer in the store to by something else that has a higher margin of profit. That's how they survive. I don't know of many station making a lot on their gas. Independently owned stations may have to have a little higher margin than that, but contrary to what some people think, the gas station does not set the price of gas. This is just the case of one station that I know the owners of in Michigan.
