How Much Money Should I Bring To Mexico?

Hey, there. I'm about a month away from being 15, and I friend and I have decided for to go to Mexico when we graduate high-school. (I know--that's 4 years away!) I've found a hotel that looks nice, which is 157.33 a night. It's called the Hacienda Vista Real. We're going to stay anywhere from 5-7 days. We're splitting the costs 50-50 for the room. We want some spending money for sourveniers. Of course we want to try some real Mexican food, but we're willing to eat at cheap fast-food places (just not everyday). I was also wondering about transportation. I don't want a taxi--it costs about $60 from the airport to the hotel. Are there buses that we can use? Also, I've been wondering--what are traveler's checks? Also, I've been wondering..what is the cost of flying down to Cancun? (I've been looking, but I can't find the costs. We don't want to drive because we've heard stories of people getting high-jacked and left in the desert. Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

Cancun is to expensive for me, when i go to Monterrey MX  i stay about 2 weeks &spend about $1000. debit card & traveler check is good to have,bus will run about 1.dollar per trip. viva aerobus air line

Just a little advice, don´t carry too much money on you and if you do, use two seperate wallets.  When I travel to mexico,  I have found using my debit card to be the easist way. I just withdraw $100 at a time from any bank ATM.  I just have to make sure to call my bank when I go into mexico and when I come back and take it from my personal experience, they will block your card as soon as you make your first transaction if you don´t.  (and making a call to an 800#  to call your bank is almost impossible from mexico.)

My experience has been to pay for airfare and hotels prior to getting there and then $200 per day. That usually leaves me with gift money (for the folks back home) for the last few days I am there. Of course, I haven't been to Cancun, so you may want to budget a little more on your per day (say 250-300) to cover the tourist prices.
