  1. It is not considered meaningful to discuss a photon (a packet of electromagnetic energy) as occupying space.  It isn't matter.  It either propagates unchanged or it's absorbed.  Electromagnetic fields obey linear superposition.  That means you can add them together without limit, and the fields just add linearly.
