  1. It was built by Gustave Eiffel between 1887-1889, for the international exhibition of 1900.

  2. 119 years old

According to The Oxford Dictionary of Phrase and Fable:

"Eiffel Tower a wrought-iron structure erected in Paris for the World Exhibition of 1889, designed and built by the French engineer Alexandre Gustave Eiffel (1832–1923). With a height of 300 metres (984 ft), it was the tallest man-made structure for many years."

  4. It was completed in 1889, which makes it 119 years old this year.

  5. It was built from 1887-1889, which makes it about 119 years old.  It was built for the Universal Exposition, and the funny thing is, they almost tore it down afterward!  It is the only building still standing from the exposition, and when it was first built, there was a concession drawn up declaring who would basically operate it for the next 20 years.

When that 20 years was up, most of the city council wanted to tear it down and sell it for scrap metal (it's actually made out of iron, not steel as most people think), but the military had discovered that the tower came in handing for picking up radio waves, which was a new technology at that time.

Also, it is possible that in the future, not all of it will be the same age.  It was actually built so that it would be possible to replace individual sections at a time.

    Pretty cool huh?
