Question:

How Often Should A Guinea Pig Urinate?

My guinea pig, Mancow, had 2 kidney stones. He passed one & had another. He has stopped crying so I think he may have passed the 2nd stone but I noticed he doesn't seem to be urinating like he had. The vet changed his diet but he basically stopped eating. I started him back on his 'fun' foods but he isn't urinating like he was when he had the stones. How often should little Mancow go potty?

  1. My male guinea pig urinates every 15-30 minutes, and my female urinates every 25-40 minutes; he drinks a lot more water, while she gets most of her water from veggies.  If he is peeing less than once every hour, he is probably dehydrated. To tell if he is dehydrated, gently pinch and twist the skin on the back of his neck and release; it should spring back to normal in less than 1 sec, otherwise he is most likely dehydrated.  Sunken in eyes are a sign of dehydration too.  You can try offering him more romaine lettuce and kale to rehydrate him, or give him water with a syringe.  If he is not urinating at all, even after being given water by force, his urethra may be seriously blocked and he will need to visit the vet. I hope your little guy gets better soon!
