  1. Daily with WD-40.

  2. It all depends upon how often you ride, where you ride, weather conditions.

if you're riding fequently, then every couple weeks you should clean and lube the chain.  Don't use grease, or 3-in-1 or WD40.  your Local Bike Shop (LBS) will have the right stuff, usually a good synthetic works well.

  3. don't ever use grease on a bike and use 3 in one oil it works great all you need to do is  put one drop on each chain link then ride it around on every gear then wipe all the left over oil off

  4. You should NEVER use grease (or greese) on a chain. Don't use 3 in 1 oil, vegetable oil, or motor oil either. Instead, use silicone or a lube made especially for chains. A $5 bottle of chain lube will last you at least a year.

Here's how to take care of your chain:

    1) Clean it. The easiest way is to spray it down with WD40 and WIPE IT OFF. Don't use this stuff to lubricate anything on a bike.

    2) Lightly lube the chain with the proper lube. If necessary, allow it to dry... some chain lubes need a bit of drying time.

  5. Bike chains are all the same so brand doesn't matter.

The moving parts are on the inside so just because it's dirty or greased up on the outside doesn't mean it's lubed. When it comes down to it if you don't hear any squeaking, grinding, or rubbing when your pedaling you probably don't need to lube it. If you do then it's time. Also, if you get caught in the rain you should do it since water and dirt will wash away much of the existing lube.

Take a rag or old t-shirt and thoroughly wipe down the outside with some kind of solvent or de-greaser (not WD40). Then use a proper bike lube (from a bike shop) and put a drop on each roller. Wipe off any excess and you're all set. Some lubes have specific requirements so read the label and follow it.

  6. Listen to mirageguitarworks. He knows what he's talking about.

You're chain is the most complex and under appreciated piece of equipment on your bike. Think about how many individual parts it has. Maintaining it properly (and replacing when worn) can save your expensive cassettes and chainwheels and extend their life greatly. Not to mention greater pedaling efficiency and enjoyment.

Chains all the same? Not a chance!
