How Oklahoma City Thunder can win an NBA title next season? NBA Feature Part 2
Despite being a team that has constantly been on the rise, Oklahoma City Thunder does need to make some significant changes if they want to fulfil their ambition of winning an NBA Championship.
One of the main factors that troubled them throughout last season was their in-ability to take care of the basketball. Thunder turned the ball in double figures on average and the main reason behind it has been their point guard
Russell Westbrook.
There is not hiding the fact that Westbrook is not like a usual point guard as he is more renowned for his explosiveness while attacking the basket. However that does not give him freedom to turn the ball over at such a high rate.
Westbrook played shooting guard back in his college days but with the Thunder, he has been given the point guard role and the young 23 year old has found it hard to adapt to his new position.
He may be a work in progress but if the Thunder want to have a strong chance in winning a championship, Westbrook will have to adjust to his role on the team. There is no doubting the fact that he is known for scoring a high number
of points – almost as equal as Kevin Durant.
However it takes him a very high number of attempts at the rim to achieve his scores and having NBA scoring championship on the same roster does get you get a fair bit of criticism for missing too many opportunities.
One more problem that Westbrook has in his play for the past two seasons that he is known for sticking to the ball too much or over dribbling on more than a few occasions. These are the small things which will need to change if
he wants to be a true asset for this young and rising Thunder team.
But that alone will not bring home an NBA Championship as a lot of things other than just turnover ratio would have to change. One of the main things that will be highlighted next season is the coaching of Scott Brooks as next
year would be a test for him.
Brooks will have to form new strategies if he wants to fulfil this team’s title ambition. In order to form a dynasty with the Thunder, Brooks will be required to not only have a strong line up but also have a strong bench.
During last season, the OKC bench – as spectacular it may be was not good enough as it lacked the offensive production. Nobody other then NBA’s Sixth Man of the Year, James Harden was able to register points at free will.
So in order to facilitate the starters, Brooks will have to form new plays for the bench players. They would have to stay on the court much longer and be able to cope with tough oppositions like Miami Heat, Boston Celtics and Chicago
Bulls.
In contrast to what this franchise has achieved in just four years of its existence, making it to the NBA Finals may be an achievement. But to this young and hungry group of talented players – everything is just a step in path
to building a dynasty and winning their first NBA Championship would get them on their way.
