I am going to Puerto Plata next week. I have got only the flight becasue I don't fancy very much resorts, I prefer stay with the local people. The plan was to spend a couple of days in Puerto Plata, then 5-6 days to Boca Chica and then the rest in Las Terrenas. But I have been reading a lot of bad news about dominic Republic criminality. In Boca Chica in particular they killed two different Italians, In terras scary experience for English people robbed in their houses with guns. Shooting on the streets and arm robbering around the country. I am asking if there is anyone that went recently to the Dominic R. and tell me how is the situation. I would like to know if it safe to get an hotel or bed and brekfast outside the resort. Thanks

  1. Puerto Plata : super safe in all places.

Boca Chica : to much prostitution (like Sosua)

La Terrenas : Very good but only french speaking people.

So my dear tourist don't believe everything you see or read, I live in the Dominican Republic for about 14 years and never had problems and been several times in the above mentionned places.

If you need a hotel or more info just ask.

    Happy Feet

  2. I have lived in Las Terrenas for two years it is very safe.. Before here I lived in Las Vegas, this town is much safer than Las Vegas. There was two guys robbing people for a few months but the police got them.. Just be street smart don't show people your cash.. Now in Las Terrenas there are people from everywhere American, English, Holland, German, and French. Before there was mostly French but now this town in growing very fast, Great Food and many things to do. Checkout. www.lasterrenastv.com  and www.lasterrenasweb.com.  This area is the best place to invest in the Caribbean..

  3. Hello,

I live in Puerto Plata.  I haven't been to your other 2 locations, though I have plans for Las Terrenas.  Just like any city, be street smart.  Don't wear expensive jewelry nor go out alone at night, use taxis at night, etc....  Puerto Plata for the most part is safe during the day.  Of course, if you look like a tourist they will overcharge you and offer you the higher price for everything.  To blend in with how the Dominicans dress- wear pants, regular shoes (not flip flops or tennis shoes) and shirts with sleeves.   They use umbrellas not ponchos and genrally carry things in bags not in their hands (still not sure how that started).

People in general are super friendly and helpful.  There are inexpensive places to stay in the city ($10/night) and cheap eats.  My favorite places to visit are the Malecon (coastal road), Teleferico (overlooking the entire city and rural area), and La Barrica (typical Dominican dance club).  Food I would recommend are a batida (milkshake) either Zapote or Lechosa flavor at Cafeteria Economica (30-40 pesos), empanadas at Punto Frio (25 pesos), and mangu de platanos (like mashed potatoes but with plantains) at corner of Chris Harris and Hugo Kunhardt in Ensanche Luperon (45 pesos).  La Parrillita on Antera Mota also has GREAT chicken sandwiches (60 pesos).  32 pesos to the dollar.

If you want more details, just email me.

  4. as long as you don't carry cash and don't show that you have $ you wont attract Bulgar.

  5. I know Boca Chica has a reputation for prostitutuion and robberies of drunken tourists. I heard some of the resorts there have armed guards. I considered staying there with my family until I heard that, so we decided to stay in Juan Dolio.

I do feel safer in a resort than outside because they have more security. While it is unfortunate for people who have been victimized, it shouldn't reflect poorly on the country as a whole because every country has it's good and it's bad people.Have a safe trip!

  6. I was just there last August, and I visited some of the areas that you mentioned. My hubby is American and I am Dominican. We just kept a low profile. Yes it might be dangerous, but it's nothing like everyday basis. most likely Dominicans are friendly and very hospitable. We went to different places including the very poor areas that I grew up on. Also pray and God's angels will be with you.

  7. well when i went to the dominican we were told not to leave the complex because we would run a big risk of getting robbed or even kidnapped. but i guess if you be careful, don't wear expensive brands or use mobiles or get alot of money out on the street, then you will probably be ok. however if i were you i wouldn't go alone and i would try to take taxis rather than walk and not go out late.
