Question:

How To Find Good Martial Arts Classes In The Bay Area?

I'm searching for affordable Tae Kwon Do, Kick Boxing, and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu classes, for my wife, in the East Bay. Any ideas of where to start looking, and how to know if the school is a good one or not.

  1. Looking at it from a BJJ perspective (though some of these also include MMA gyms), there are several school databases you could try in order to find a class::

    http://www.trainjiujitsu.com/bjj/

    http://www.bjjmap.com/

    http://www.gymdb.com/

In terms of judging whether or not its a good school, I have some further ideas here:

I'd also suggest checking out the Bullshido FAQ on finding a good school:

Hope that helps: good luck with your training!

  2. google it

  3. Ever heard of a phone book? The internet?

    Good luck

  4. The Bay Area is riddled with martial arts schools of every kind. You have a big job ahead of you - you must go yourself and check them out. Go when there is a class and when there is no class - providing the teacher is there.

If I lived in San Francisco, I would live near China Town and befriend all those Old Chinese Teachers who teach in basements and backyards. Man!

  5. In the East Bay Chuck Liddell just opened up a gym called MMA Jacked.  I;m going to check it out soon.  It's on East Stanley Blvd in Livermore..  One of the main trainers there is Jake Shields who is the 7th ranked Welterweight in the world.  Hopefully this helps!

  6. Don't get any McDojos, one way to tell is if it's a franchise or if you there is a contract. (which means you can't stop paying until the contracts over even if you don't go to the classes you would still have to pay for 1 year, most contracts are a year) You should try to find one that has a REAL (as in not half American) Chinese Grand (the Grand is very important) Master. The prices shouldn't be over 100 dollars except for maybe the black belt test. Mine is 50$ a month and 50$ for most tests.  Hope I helped!
