Question:

How To Improve The Memory On A Inspiron 2650?

I have an old Inspiron 2650. It has a max of 16GB, but I only have less then 4GB left. Any ideas of how to boost the memory on this? I can't really delete any programs nor do I have the money to buy a external memory hard-drive or a new laptop.

  1. You have the memory confused with your hard drive size. memory is measured in MB(megabytes)and GB(gigabytes) older computers might have as little as 128 mb(or less on super old ones ) to 4 or even 8 GB on newer ones.   That's a whole other thing.   You have 4 GB of hard drive capacity left.  might want to try the disk cleanup feature to rid it of old temp files that aren't needed. the only other option is to buy a bigger internal/external drive.  No way around it. remember the program you run (like windows XP) takes up like 5 or 6 GB on it's own ,not counting any other programs and software.

  2. You are mixing two different pieces of hardware. the 16gb you speak of is harddrive space. Which I assume is a 20gb harddrive.

Memory is a small card with flat pins. if you have a 20gb harddrive I'd guess you have about 128-256 mb of memory.

    They are not the same.

If you can't delete anything then you are stuck. Your only options are to delete or buy a new harddrive.

  3. Do you mean hard drive space?  Memory is the Random Access Memory which makes programs run faster and you can run more of them at a time.  If you mean hard drive space, that is the room where you store your documents, songs, videos, programs, etc. and to upgrade that on a laptop is difficult.  The easiest way would be to buy an external hard drive.

  4. If you need more space you can take it to a computer repair shop or Tech and can put in a new hard drive (whatever size you want up till 350 GB).
