Question:

How To Retrain My Cat?

My cat has for the last 2-3 weeks been going to the bathroom everywhere except her litter box. I've been putting her in the bathroom with the litter box, food and water (on opposite sides) and a toy whenever I leave the house or when I go to bed (because she's been peeing in my room and in the hallway and there's no where else to put her). We got some medication for a UTI (Though they're not sure if that's what she really has because we couldn't get a urine sample because she wasn't peeing anywhere we could get to it.)

I've shut all the bedroom doors so now the only place she can go is in the bathroom with her stuff, or downstairs with me and I watch her to make sure she doesn't start going somewhere else. I put aluminum foil in the hall where she was peeing before because they said that she won't like the sound. I also got this anti-anxiety spray stuff just because we don't know what's going on.

I'm hoping it will only take a few days of locking her up for her to start using the litter box.

But how should I retrain her? Am I doing the right things?

  1. cats dont usually lke having their food & water near their litterbox.

  2. Glad to hear she's been to the vet....that's the first and best step!

Litter box problems are very frustrating for all.....human and feline.  Here's a link that you might find helpful:

    Good Luck!

  3. It may be the litter. Many cats don't like deodorant in their litter as it is un-natural to them. I use a cardboard box and I fill it with dirt or sand. For some reason it doesnt smell as bad as any of the litter I have tried and they love to use the box because they can scratch it. I just throw the whole box away as needed and get a fresh one, get my shovel and put a little dirt in it. Another thing may be where you are putting her litter box.  The bathroom with the door closed may be stressful to her. However, cats don't like their box in a place with alot of traffic from people. Hope this helps. Oh by the way, they also make a spray on catnip. you could try spraying the outside of her box with it and it may draw her to it.
