  1. You can try things, like wearing a rubber band on your wrist, and snapping it when you have a negative recurring thought that needs replacing by a positive thought.  Doctors give you tips like this.

  3. STAY AWAY FROM PEOPLE

  4. I don't mean to take your problems lightly, but there is truth in this. There's an old saying, A young woman is walking down the streets of New York City and asks a stranger, "How do I get to Carnegie Hall?" The reply was, "Practice, baby, practice."  There's a lot of truth in that.

You can certainly read books about how to socialize and feel more comfortable, but the only way to become good at anything is by doing it. A few tips: Focus on others, instead of yourself. Write out some questions to ask other people before you go out. Keep your "cheat sheet" with you and use it. When you get overly nervous, go to the bathroom and take a few deep breaths and tell yourself, "I'm doing fine". Lastly, remember, everyone is nervous in a gathering. You're certainly not alone. Many people have social phobias.

You'll do fine, but preparation and practice are the keys to being successful at almost everything in life. It's like reading gives you the theory, but it's only by doing that gives you the practical skills. And everyone can learn social skills. Good luck.

  5. Hmm. Well, it all depends on what type of social phobia or anxiety disorder that you have. Some of them can only be treated through therapy or medication..or both.

You could see a naturopath about holistic treatment. Learning meditation and exercising, such as Yoga, can also be very helpful. You also should look at your diet. Sometimes, eating too much refined sugar/salt etc can contribute to anxiety and depression, as can tobacco, alcohol, or street drugs, as well as lack of sleep.

One very good book that advocates not using meds is called "When Panic Attacks" by David D. Burns, M.D. It is a great book and readily availiable, and teaches techniques to deal with anxiety.

    Best Wishes!
