Question:

How To Update My Graphics Driver When Its A Sony?

I bought a Sony Laptop, and it has an Nvidia graphics card in it. The problem is, when I go to update my drivers (which is what all the games I want to play are telling me I have to do) the website (Nvidia.com) tells me that I have to update my drivers off of Sony.com. I tried even going to the troubleshooting section of Nvidia.com and figured I'd bipass that message by downloading it from that area, but then it just fails to recognize that my PC even runs windows and shuts down. Sony hasnt had a drivers update since mid-2007, and we're at the end of 08. I tried emailing Sony, but they said that at this time there is no reason for them to update the drivers. I bought this around January of this year, so I'd hate to think I'd have to replace it already. This is my personal laptop, I have to update my work laptops on a regular basis, so I cant afford to update my personal 1 as often.

I'm going to leave my model number on my Sony Laptop, just incase someone can either locate the driver I need, or possibly has delt with this in the past.

Model - VGN-AR620E

I already tried Sony's website as well as Nvidia.com, and sent both emails, so please dont tell me to look on their sites since I already have, many many different times.

  1. If you want a driver written specifically for your video card, you will have to wait until Sony decides to write one.

Nvidia drivers are available for Nvidia Ge Force 8400 and 8400 GS cards. These may work with your card, which is identified by the Sony spec sheets as 8400M GT. This is probably a modified card built for Sony by Nvidia.

If you want to try one of those drivers, they are here.

I use the ATI drivers for my VisionTek video card, which has an ATI GPU chip, the only difference I have noted is the ATI drivers remove the overclocking done by the Visiontek drivers. I prefer not overclocking anyway,

  2. The problem is that nvidia and ATI don't support laptop video cards.  Updated drivers are up to the laptop makers, who are notorious for not providing updates.

probably because they want you to buy a new laptop!

Head over to laptopvideo2go.com. You should be able to find drivers and .inf file for the video card in your laptop.

RTFM! Read the fcuking manual at laptopvideo2go to figure out how to install.

    It should be something like:

1 instal the drivers, it will error out.

2 copy the inf file to the nvidia driver folder, it will ask to copy over the old inf file, click yes.

3 re-run the setup.exe from the same folder you copied the inf file to.

    Good luck
