okay, so here's the thing:

i'm 15 years and i've never used a tampon before. I have swimming in P.E. in school right now, and my period is about to come. So... i was just wondering are their instructions on the box? or how do i know how to wear one? does it hurt? and does it ever get "lost" inside of you? i'm really nervous about this...and how often should i change it? can i use the restroom with it on? will i be able to get any infections? what happens if it leaks?

the more the info, the better! thankyou so much!

[i guess you can tell i'm really scared to use a tampon..:s]

  1. Using a tampon isn't dificult at all.  Check out www.tampax.com.  The website gives step-by-step instructions.

  2. Ok sweety, take a big breath and calm down, tampons are nothing to be scared of :)

Yes there are instructions in the box, or any brand or type, so whichever type you go for, there will be instructions.

Tampons do not hurt if you insert them correctly and slowly. It might feel weird the first time, especially if you have never had any sexual intercourse, but don't worry, they are not big , even smaller than your finger, so if you want to ease yourself first, you can always try to slowly put one finger in.

As per the instructions in every box, 8 hours is the maximum lenght of time a tampon should be kept in, else you risk a toxic shock from the bacteria inside your v****a.

Don't worry, it can't get lost in you, and yes you can go to the restroom with it (though I dislike doing a #2 with one in case the cord gets dirty), just tap the cord dry with paper and you will be fine.

Leaks will usually only happen if you use a tampon absorbency lower than your current flow (so if you use a regular tampon instead of a super and you are under heavy flow, chances are that if you keep it for 8 hours you will have leaks). Don't worry about leaking in the pool if you are using a tampon, especially if you put it in just before, you will be fine. And outside a pool, you can always wear a thin pantie liner to protect against leaks.

Now one last bit of personal advice from my own experience. I have personally used different brands of tampons, at first it was usually only out of necessity, when swimming, but I was never happy with them, always uncomfortable. In other words, I just couldn't get them positioned good. These were tampons with applicators, and for some reason, I just never could get them in right.

Then I discovered the OB brand. That totally changed my view of tampons. Now I use mostly that, almost never pads anymore, and I could not be more comfortable. The OB ones do not have any applicators, you push them in with your finger. While some girls seem to find that totally disgusting (no clue why), I find that I always get the tampon exactly where I want it.

I'm not trying to sell you to this particular brand, just saying that it's the one that worked best for me. For more info about these particular tampons, check out their website (http://www.obtampons.com/) which also includes instructions on how to use them (some of those applicable to any brand of tampons really), and what type (absorbency) to use and when.

Good luck with those swimming classes!

  3. I started using Tampax tampons when I was 11.  There are instructions inside every box with pictures.  Most boxes also have a web site on them.  I suggest trying different brands and applicators.  They are all made a little differently.  Tampax has a removal cord that runs though it.  Playtex and Kotex have a string connecting two pieces of material.  Also there are no applicator (O.B.) cardboard applicator (Tampax), and plastic applicators (Tampax, Playtex, and Kotex). I always liked the Tampax with a plastic applicator.  Tampax has a really good cord  it will not get lost inside of you if you follow the instructions.  You must change your tampon every 8 hours no matter what kind you use because of TSS.  TSS is explained on the box and inside the instructions.  You may have to change it every 4 hours so as not to leak.  You can go to the bathroom with them in.  All of my knowledge comes from 20 years tampon wearing experience and reading the instructions like crazy when I was a p*****n and a teenager.  I linked tampon websites and another I found when I did a search for the sites.

  4. Each box has a paper inside that has instructions, not generally the best diagrams, but you should be able to figure it out.

You should start with the ones that have an applicator since you're not familiar with them. These have a slick coating on the outside of them which will make it easier to go up. Then you push the bottom piece for the it go in and stay up (the box will cover this). It will NOT get lost if you don't put it up too far. They all have a piece of string that hangs down. Just as long as there is still enough string hanging out that you can grab onto it will not get lost/stuck. When you're done and ready to change it or take it out, just pull that string, toss it in the toilet and flush.

It very well could hurt the first time you use them.

  5. its really easy, buy a box of tampons with applicators (they are easier) there will be a leaflet inside the box telling you how to use it, (i use tampax)

it might hurt a little bit if you get it in the wrong place..lol. it can never get lost inside you because it has a string to pull it out by and also it has nowhere to go. you need to change it every 8 hours. you can use the restroom with it in..you just need to move the string out of the way.

the only risk is getting TSS (toxic shock syndrome) but it is reaaally really rare. i dont think tampons leak - well its never happened to me anyway...lol. i was really scared to use a tampon for the first time as well but it turned out fine! =)

if you need anymore help or advice heres my msn addy im-never-gonna-tell-you@hotmail.co.uk good luck! x
