  1. This big picture is that the idea is just the start.  Then come the experiments.  If the experiments are good and meaningful, a paper is written and submitted to the appropriate journal for peer review.  If it is accepted, it will be published.

  2. It takes a long time for any idea or question to become a published paper.

First off you have to have a good question that will be worth researching, since research need plenty of money.

Second you need to know what procedures to use, so you need to read up on what other people have done in your researching area.

Thirdly, once you've gathered enough information, you put the procedures into action, which usually is a lot of 'hit and miss' results. (meaning sometimes you get some results, sometimes you don't).

Fourth once you get some results and also even if you don't get results, you work on writing the paper. It needs to show a brief introduction to your researching area, what your question is, what procedures you used, and what result you had if any.

Then you send your draft to someone who is knowledgeable on your researching field. They'll read it and pass it or fail it. Then your paper is sent to a company to be published.

There you go. Step by step from an idea to a published paper. This process can take years to months. It depends all on how long your second and third step takes.
