How a check is cleared?

can you tell me the process of a check go threw to become cleared?? it would be nice if you can also give me a site that has a chart or something.

  1. Even simpler.  My mom was a bank teller in the old days. Someone deposits a check into their bank account.  Mom would look to make sure the check was signed and had the numbers all filled in and was endorsed by the depositor.  Once she accepted the check, it was deposited.  

    Part 2 is done at the other end.  The check was written on an account in another bank. That bank has to tell Mom that the person who wrote the check actually has money in their account.  A check without money in the account is just a piece of paper with no value.  When the 2nd bank called Mom and said there was money in that account, the check "cleared".  The money was debited from the payor and credited to the payee.

    Easy to do.  Nowadays there are machines that "read" the checks and talk to each other.   a check can clear in minutes.
