  1. in a chat room! They could be in constant communications without a problem of course if they need to be in a place where no computers are available, an interpreter may work, better if he or she has understanding of architecture!

  2. In person it is probably most efficient to have an interpreter available.

Of course otherwise over the phone and computer there is a lot of technology to support deaf people such as TTY or even simple IM and chat.

  3. The majority of my critical communication happens over the phone or in emails or other written format. All of that is easily usable by a deaf person as efficiently as a a non-deaf person. With TTY it is probobly a better means of communication as you have that extra second or so to consider what you are saying before it out there. That is sooooo valuable. The problem I have with written media is that it is so difficult to convey emotion and often clients and consultants attribute their own mood to a communication when reading it, and content is added or lost depending on that mood they attribute to it.

Face to face is inevitable though and is essential to building and maintaining relationships with the client. I'd say that a deaf person who can lip read and verbally communicate would still be most effective, but many of the presentations I give could easily be automated and narrarated in advance.

We've also got into the practice of using a big screen TV instead of a projector for our presentations. With the TV we find that we can have the lights on ands still easily see the presentation.  I'm sure something like this would also work well for a deaf person who prefers to see peoples faces for cues on if they have questions or comments.
