  1. Physiotherapy is best with a professional.

But for me biking is a really good start, zero impact, it's controlled and in a single plane of motion so while your knee is still week and wobbly there's not much chance of re-injuring it biking. Also, on a stationary bike you can lower the seat every time to work on the range of motion. When you get stronger, balance exercises are good to improve the strength of the supporting muscles and ligaments as well as a thing called proprioception which can be a bit off after surgery.

    Good Luck

  2. Well I think it really depends on how bad the ligaments are damaged.

If it is just a sprain and no major tearing occured, I would recommend staying off of it as much as possible for a few days or maybe even a week. Then when you go back to working out, don't do anything you don't feel comfortable doing with your knee. Basically start off slowly and gradually get to where you feel comforable doing more strenous exercises. A brace may help stabilize the knee in question too, especially when you first start back.

If you tore the ligaments, that's a whole different story. You'll most likely need surgery to repair, especially if it you ACL or MCL. Most likely, if you did enough damage to tear one of those you probably tore some cartiledge too, it is not always the case. Your doctor performing the surgery will give you a rough idea on how to rehabilitate but you'll need physical therapy to be sure your getting the proper range of motion back and the muscles built up again. The key will be not allowing the scar tissue to build up too much. If it does build up, your in for a world pain when they break it for you. Overall it should take about 6 to 7 months to get back to fitness from surgery like that. I hope that you do not have to go through this.
