  1. This depends on their contract that they signed with the team.

Many players sign a multi-year contract which guarantees them with salary, incentives, bonuses if they go to the playoffs etc.

Usually, the team will attach a period of time after the expiration of the contract during which time the player cannot negotiate with any other team. This is a period of restricted free agency. This time allows a hockey club to evaluate the effectiveness of this player in the possible line-up for next season. The team can also reflect on each player's contribution to the team.

Then, the team can negotiate a fair market price for the player's services based on the past year or during the contract period to see how much the players popularity throughout the league.

After a period of time, the player is allowed to negotiate with any team and accept their teams for salary etc. This is when they are free to talk to everyone about their services. This is when the player is free to negotiate with anyone with your skills. Everything is up for sale.

If one teams talkes to a player and lures him away, then the new team may have to compensate such a loss from one time. Hence, the player is a free agent with compensation.

    Every contract is written differently.

  3. K your contract with your team ends and either they don't want to resign you or you choose not to be resigned.  Another way is that your contract might end and you want more money than the team will give you.

  4. players become free agents when their contract expires. then they either become an unrestricted free agent which means any team can give them an offer or they become a restricted free agent where the team they are currently playing for has the first rights to a player in which they submit an "offer sheet" or what they are offering the player to come back. if the palyer declines or waits until a set date he becomes an unrestricted free agent

  5. When the contract expires and when the team did not
