  1. I think it depends on the state.  In Michigan, you have to complete at least 2 successful years teaching and have 18 credits in order to renew your certificate and move from a provisional certificate to a professional certificate.  You have 6 years to do so.  After that, you need to get 6 credits every 3 years to maintain your certificate.

    Many people collect CEU's or SB-CEU's when they attend professional development workshops. Usually a workshop will be .2 or .5 CEU's, and you need to add them up until you have your credits.  People also take courses through distance learning universities to keep their certificate current.

    Many teachers eventually do move ahead and get a second degree, but again, the rules still apply, 6 credits every 3 years to keep your certificate current.

    It's a bit different than in the business world!
