  1. I agree with the peanut butter issue as well as presenting healthy foods. But I would avoid showing too many non-nutrituious or junk foods. Focus on what you want the children to eat and learn, not what you don't want. Similarly to how you focus on what positive behaviors you want them to learn rather than telling them "Don't do this and don't do that..." Kids rarely hear the no or not in those directions.

Include healthy options throughout the day. Use those play foods in different activities including color matching activities. Food and health can be discussed during all types of activities. Grow some seedlings together in small cups. All you need are dried beans, seeds, or even a potato. You can use math skills to measure, science skills to discuss the stages of a seed and a plant, and you're incorporating nutrition discussions.

If your students like dramatic play follow their interests. If food is a topic they like to play with, encourage them to develop a restaurant using the healthy foods. They can make a menu by cutting out pictures or drawing them. With giant boxes they can build a restaurant or drive through window. They can dress up in "uniforms" that they create...on and on. Let them lead the decision making while offering them opportunities to be creative.

When you give them choices between healthy foods they are learning what they like and how to make positive decisions. But be ready, they may not like the new healthy food on a first taste. I think it takes about 15 times before a young child learns to like a food. With 2 year olds we know how strong their opinions can be so be ready.

    Good luck and happy eating!

  2. Teach the children about it! Make food drawings of healthy food and non-healthy foods to give kids the foundation for nutrition they need.

Also serve healthy snacks instead of pudding or cookies serve apple with peanut butter and veggies with dip.

  3. *Offer a variety of nutritious foods for meals and snacks.

*Model good, healthy eating habits for the children.

*Send home fun, easy suggestions for parents to promote good eating habits in the home.

*Have pretend food in the dramatic play area and play with the children.  When they "cook" for you, always make nutritious choices like "May I have some milk with my sandwich?" or "Mmmm.  I see you gave me some carrots and apples.  I love carrots and apples!"
