Question:

How about 9/11 every month?

John McCain flew 23 bombing missions over North Vietnam in a campaign called Operation Rolling Thunder. During this bombing campaign, which lasted for almost 44 months, U.S. forces flew 307,000 attack sorties, dropping 643,000 tons of bombs on North Vietnam (roughly the same tonnage dropped in the Pacific during all of World War II). Though the stated targets were factories, bridges, and power plants, thousands of bombs also fell on homes, schools, and hospitals. In the midst of the campaign, Defense Secretary Robert McNamara estimated that we were killing 1,000 civilians a week. That's more than one 9/11 every single month -- for 44 months.

What's not heroic about that? Is it any wonder all politicians speaking in public about John McCain are required to preface their remarks with a fawning admiration for his war service?

  1. So the Al Qadea have a supporter here! At least we know free speech works and I haven't been fighting wars in vain for the last 20 years.

You keep posting the same info, so I guess you are waiting like most ranting for some to agree and then you'll be smug and happy and can say: 'see I knew it!'

  2. Mc Cain and GBW and other cold war "heroes" like them are criminals:

  3. I'm guessing from your question that you are an advocate for increased spending on military technology?  As you correctly point out, there was a significant amount of collateral damage attributed to the bombing campaigns within Vietnam.  Fortunately, the smart weapons of today are supremely superior to those that were employed by all the brave military aviators engaged in the battle against communism on the Vietnam front.  Unfortunately, the constrained military budgets of today, even as this country is engaged in a Global War on Terror, slow the development of more advanced weapons that could even further reduce collateral damage.

With respect to your implication that John McCain should not be considered heroic because the weapons his government provided to him were not capable of pinpoint accuracy seems rather naive.  With every combat mission John McCain flew during Vietnam, he, like every other military aviator of the time, put his life on the line to accomplish the mission that his nation called upon him to complete.

If the heroics of anyone of that era need to be questioned, I would look at the failed policies and strategies of a government headed by JFK.
