In the nineteenth century it gained its greatest fame as a result of the novel and play by Dumas, The Lady of the Camellias, which served as the basis for Verdi's opera La Traviata and several films including Greta Garbo's Camille. It is a pet name and not the given name of the heroine, and the Latin root has no relation to the flower that is her symbol.
