Question:

How about transmitting a distress signal into space?

So far we have only transmitted scientific messages into space (along with all of the other radio and TV signals). Interesting enough but it's not getting any attention. What about sending a distress signal? With all the problems facing the world, I think we could use some extra help. Any thoughts?

  1. That's a dangerous idea.  A distress signal basically means "We're weak!"  If we send one out, a greedy race of aliens might decide Earth would be a good place for them to live.

  2. Well, how would they know it was a distress signal? The only universally understood language is math and I don't think there is a way to say "help!" in math.

But yeah, it would be cool to have an advanced civilization here. It would be good for the world. Humans need a boss, otherwise we are out of control.

  3. maybe its not such a good idea. what if its a bad thing? if there is, indeed another form of human life out there

  4. The same thought has occurred to me. I don't know how such a message could be formulated to be understandable as to content, so I don't see how we could expect a response.

  5. It would have to be a really powerful signal, to even become noticeable between the noise we produce and the noise created by the sun, when received a few light years away.

Also, how should an alien civilization finally know, that we are calling for help? Most humans are not even capable of understanding animal body language, so what do you expect of other civilizations. Do you hope ignorance is only a human trait?

  6. Better to listen then send. Do you really want some advanced civilization coming here?  They may not be friendly, and they would definitely be more advanced.  Could be the end of life on this planet as we know it!  Anyways, every radio signal we ever send goes on forever into space (forever as far as we need to be concerned) and we haven't even had radios long enough to have had a signal reach another galaxy yet.

  7. We have been listening into space for the last 30 years, and have not heard a peep. Why ? .. simple.. There are countless numbers of intelligent and advanced life out there, and they are keeping quiet ! There must be a d**n good reason for this. Maybe we should follow there example.
