How accurate is google maps when measuring distance?

I think it is quite accurate when measuring from point A to point B as it measures from 'city hall to city hall'.  I have driven from city hall to city hall and it was right on with google. I only did it the once but it was completely accurate.  I should mention that the distance was less than 100 km.

I should also mention that I used google maps - get directions.

If you just use google maps and type in the two places it gives "as the crow flies (straight - line distance)" mileage which is not driving mileage.

As far as all the other google maps data that is another story. So much data is outdated, missing etc. I read this blog about it and found it very interesting.
