This site would be a great reference to answer that question.

I just read this book, and I do believe it is the best fiction novel that accurately depicts the actual event...mainly the horrors of the Civil War and its immediate consequence. In addition, it is safe to say that this book is historically accurate because the author Stephen Crane wrote this novel one a couple decades of the horrendous occasion...he lived in a time where the aftermaths of the war was still prevalent.

And if you carefully analyze Crane's writing, you can see that he uses profuse figurative language and gore, wordy descriptions to convey the battles of the Civil War, though some of those may have been exaggerated.

well, thats all I've got for now. hope this helps.
