  1. Because you should always leave enough space in front of your car so that dont happen.

  2. Usually if the front of your car hits something the police officer will give you a ticket. You should have stopped at a sooner time. Don't be in such a rush that you "tailgate". Sit back, relax, and enjoy God's creation.

"This is the day which the LORD hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it." --- Psalms 118:24

EDIT: I guess all of the thumbs-downs mean, "We don't like the Bible verse."?

  3. You should have stopped, technically, with enough space between you and the car in front of you, for exactly situation which you find yourself in.  Legally, you are at fault, along with the driver behind you.  The car you hit gets a nice insurance check.  The car behind you should pay for your car though.

  4. Ina chain reaction accident like that the driver in the middle can be held partially at fault.  Since you got a ticket probably for following too closely the insurance companies can hold you partially at fault.

  5. We could use a little more info on this one.

    1. What was your ticket for?

    2. Did this happen at a stoplight or in regular traffic?

Despite what the majority of answers indicate you are not at-fault in any way IF you came to a complete stop without hitting the car in front of you. If you got pushed into the car in front you wouldn't be

The people who say you were too close are way off base. If you were able to stop without hitting the car in front of you how the heck could you be following too close! The laws in most states say you have to follow at a safe enough distance so that you don't hit the car in front of you. I haven't seen a law that says if you stop, but you were within X amount of feet from the lead car that you were following too close. You complied with the law if you didn't hit the car in front of you first.

Assuming you have insurance talk to your adjuster about how they see the fault on this one.

If the front car is claiming that you hit them first then that might be hard for any party to prove or disprove.

    Good Luck

  6. because you suck at life... quit driving like a jerk and maybe you would have had enough room not to get pushed into the car in front of you

  7. failure to control.

  8. Easy.  You were following too close for conditions.

  9. U probably were to close to that car even when stopped.

  10. But you had been stopped before you were hit, right?  It's possible the police officer did not understand the situation, or figured you could just take it to the judge.  That's exactly what you need to do.  You'd need to look at exactly what law he cited you for, but I am unaware of any law that says you must stop with extra padding space in front of you in case some idiot rear ends you.
