This is probably the most general question i can ask, but im looking to go into medicine. This being said i would love to come out of my first 4 years of school debt free as med school will put me heavy into debt most likely. Im planning on majoring in biochemistry or possibly biology as some schools do not have biochemistry as a major.

Ok so heres my problem. A lot of schools i am looking at are right around 50,000 a year. There's no way i can afford that. I also dont have the chance for financial aid, as my dad makes 90,000 a year, but isn't going to cover barely any of my schooling, especially not what the state (based on financial aid stuff) says he can cover. I am retaking my ACT this fall, the first time i took it i got a 29 composite, probably not my best. I am taking college part time this year, its my senior year in high school, and by the end of the year i should have around 30 credits built up. My high school GPA is a 3.85. I feel that im there academic wise, but i know that a school isn't going to hand me 50 grand because i got a good score on my ACT...is there any path i can take to help me through this mess, or am i going to be stuck going to a state school and sacrifice a good private education in order to be able to cover the costs of schooling?

Right now the best place i think i could go would be Carleton College in Northfield, MN (im from MN so ya)

Thats like 45,000 a year tho...so right now my 1 and 2 options are the University of Minnesota and Lipscomb University down in Nashville, TN (possibly Vanderbilt for med school if i go there?)

  1. It's not going to kill you to slum it for awhile being "stuck going to a state school" and sacrificing your future to be debt free for undergrad.  Despite it being such a poor education, it will help your attitude and help you relate to your patients.  Work on humility.  Success in college and in life will be determined in part by how well you get along with everyone.

Sheesh.  State school grad and debt free.

    Good luck.

  2. Go to your high school guidance counselors office, they should have a list of scholarships available. I don't know if they'll have the '09-'10 school year availabe just yet but if they don't they will soon. There are literally THOUSANDS of scholarships out there for people that are everything from really good gpa's right down to if you have a visual problem (no lie there IS a scholarship out there for people who have glasses) Apply to as many as you think you can get. It wouldn't hurt and you don't have to pay back scholarships.

  3. I'm a medical professional living in Montana.  The Indian reservations have a great need for doctors, nurses, therapists and lots of other health care providers.  If you make a 2 year commitment to work on a reservation they will pay off ALL of your student loans no matter how high they are.  Plus you will get a decent salary with the job too.
