  1. Keeping a balance does not help your credit report. Having a negative balance effects it badly, but positive balance does not. Pay all your bills on time, every month. Don't allow any of it to be late for 12 to 16 months. That will help your credit rating. Get a credit card and keep a small balance on it that you can pay and keep it rotating for 12 to 24 months. I hate that actually, you'd think creditors would be intelligent to NOT want credit instead of seeing it revolve for more than a year or two. But i don't make the rules, if i did, things would be far better off than they are now!

Do those two things and you'll start to build credit. Often, if you find you can't get a real credit card you can try these other options. One, get a pre-paid for credit card. They often show up as real credit cards and help your credit score in the long run. Or, often department stores have their own credit cards and hand them out more easily.

    good luck.
