  1. After the collapse of the Ottoman Empire during WWI, the province of Palestine became a British territory. The League of Nations, which existed between the two world wars, approved the British Mandate of Palestine with the intent of creating a "national home for the Jewish people."

The need for a Jewish homeland was keenly felt after the close of WWII and the revelation of the Holocaust to the world. In 1947, the United Nations approved the partition of Palestine into two states, one Jewish and one Arab. The Arab League rejected the plan, but on May 14, 1948, the Jewish provisional government declared Israel's independence.

Subsequently, Israel's Arab neighbours invaded the new nation with the hope of regaining territory previously held by the Ottoman Empire and preventing the creation of an independent Jewish state. The Israelis defeated the Arabs in a series of wars confirming their independence and expanding the borders of the Jewish state beyond those in the UN Partition Plan. Since then, Israel has been in conflict with many of the neighbouring Arab countries, resulting in several major wars and decades of violence that continue to this day.
