  1. You can't use dye to turn a gray dress white. Dye is transparent, so it can only make the existing color darker, not lighter.

Don't ever use chlorine bleach on polyester! Ordinary household bleach will permanently damage polyester, resulting in impossible-to-remove ugly yellow stains. You can try Rit Color Remover to see if that will lighten the color of your dress. It works well on some dyes and not at all on others, but you won't know whether or not it will work on your gray dress until you try it.

If you want to go darker, you can use dye. Polyester dye will work to turn your gray dress black, or navy blue, or any very dark color that has gray in it. The gray will show through whatever color you choose. Don't use ordinary dyes, such as Rit dye, because they will not stick to polyester. You will not be able to buy any polyester dye in your local shops, but you can buy it by mail-order. You can order "iDye Poly" polyester dye from Blick Art materials or Dharma Trading company.

To use polyester dye, as with any hot-water dye, you will need an enormous cooking pot that is made of a non-reactive material such as stainless steel or enamel. This pot should never again by used for food, because clothing dyes will contaminate food. The pot should big big enough for the dress to move about in freely as you boil it in the dye; if the pot is not big enough, you will get a splotchy or tie-dyed look.
