How and when classifying living things began..?

The first classification system is credited to Aristotle - all living things were classified as either plants or animals.

Plants were classified by their size - herbs, shrubs, or trees

Animals were classified by where and how they live. For example, bees, bats and birds would have been in the same group since they all fly.

This system did not take into account the evolutionary history of organisms.
