My younger brother is an aspiring programmer but I don't have any experience in this field and can't give him any advice . He is currently in high school and wants to know how other programmers got started, what schools to go to, and anything else that would be good for him to know.

Many thanks everyone!

  1. I'm not much of a programmer, but now my way around for the things I need. I started with my programmable calculators when studying in college- games and math problems. Reading and time spent actually doing test programs helped me gain a lot.

It was fun and addictive- to this date i like doing my own stuff, although I am working in less 'digitally governed' life.

  2. I started on my TI-85 calculator...wrote a couple games in BASIC for my calculator while I should have been studying in High School. Go figure that the thing that made me repeat Algebra 2 was the thing that jumpstarted my actual career...

I moved on to Visual Basic, and then go hooked in the Web Application Development field. That's where I reside now.

Learning nowadays is easier than ever. Spending some time online, in forums...and you can get into it quickly.
