Question:

How and when is English GCSE coursework marked?

I'm not so keen on my English teacher (fingers crossed she doesn't read this!) and don't love the way she marks; she's new and hasn't been teaching in England for long. Other teachers at my school seem more lenient with marks but apparently our teacher marks our final coursework drafts. Is this sent to others for confirmation? Is it that hard to get an A* in a coursework essay (the essay's on war poetry)? I'm pretty sure nobody in my class has got this grade yet; but all our English classes are mixed ability and I'm at a pretty good school, so I find it quite unusual. Especially as other teachers have given them...

  1. It's not hard to get an A*, depends on the materials you're given. If you get a wide variety of notes (Internet, from class), and explore many different ideas and theories, you should get a good A or A*. Try to be original too.

At the end of your 2 year course, all of the English teachers will get together and moderate the folders. If your teacher HAS been marking your class' coursework too low, the group's grades will go up.

Remember though, coursework is only worth 7% of your Language grade, and about 30% of your Literature grade.
