  1. Are you asking for example of situations when it may be necessary to adapt the way you communicate so that others can understand you?

    I can think of several examples:

    1) Someone who is deaf or hard of hearing - Be sure to face the person when speaking, or you may need sign language.

    2) Someone who does not speak English well - need to speak slowly, may need to re-explain using different words, may need an interpreter.

    3) Someone who is "communication handicapped".  I have a friend with this diagnosis.  She does not pick up on subtle social cues, so I need to be explicit with her.  She has a hard time entering a conversation already in progress - I need to tell her what we are talking about, and help her enter the conversation.

    Really, we all adapt our communication based on the audience, but some people require more adaptation than others.
