  1. Hello samjf00:

Congratulations on your Eagle Scout project.

If you are not near a military installation, or have a (deployed) National Guard or Reserve unit in your area, contact the American Legion or Veterans of Foreign Wars post in your area. These folks can give you information on how and what to send overseas. If, for some reason, you don't have either of these fraternal organizations nearby, you can try the military recruiter in your area.

Be sure that your project reflects your leadership skills, and not on just gathering items. while this is a worthwhile endeavor, the Eagle project must showcase your leadership. Document all the time you spend researching your project, and the process it takes to get the items.

    Keep on Scoutin'

  2. You can contact a Family Readiness Group for the Army, and I'm sure there are similar groups for the other branches. The Family Readiness Group would be able to direct you how to do this. You could also advertise on Craig's List in your local CL chapter that you are willing to send a troop items. A family member who has a loved one in Iraq or Afghanistan is bound to respond, and though they will likely not feel comfortable giving the soldier's address (which by the way, you cannot send things to a troop in general, it is usually directed to the Commanding Officer or 1st Sgt., in the Army anyway), they would be very willing to take the items you collect and send it to the troops themselves. My brother is in Iraq and when people offer to send things to him or his troop, that is what we do, because we are afraid people will send mean things or unwittingly send things that are dangerous or prohibited - if the items come through us, though, we know everything is a-okay and can send it.

By the way, just so you know, in the Army at least, a troop (or company) is 80-100 people, so if you aren't willing to send to that many people, you might be better off sending stuff to a team, which is 5-10 people.
