You can purchase stocks yourself through a dividend reinvestment program (DRIP).  In this case, you are basically purchasing stock shares directly from the company.  One very popular choice for DRIPs is Disney stock.  You can read more information about it here: http://corporate.disney.go.com/investors...

    However, with discount brokers so cheap nowadays, I would recommend to just go with a broker.  I currently use Firstrade and it's a simple and cheap $6.95 flat fee rate per trade.
