How and why are famous people pronounced sires or dukes by the queen of England?

I mean these people accomplish things to the world and donations, fortune, fame, or work. What do they represent

  1. Maybe if they contribute something meaningful to the world. Music, huge donations, etc.


  2. The title "Sir" is in reference to a man being Knighted by the king or queen and duke is a title of nobility. For example, Prince Andrew is the Duke of Windsor as well as being a Prince. However, he is addressed as the Duke of Windsor because right now his succession to the crown is behind that of his nephews, William and Harry. In regards to be addressed as Sir, these men don't have any noblity or royal blood.
