How and why do tornadoes occur?

why do tornadoes occur in hot weather, on land a long way from the sea???

need the answer for my geography homework and cant find anything to help. if you know, please help?!?!

  1. Basically they need a moisture source and that is accomplished in Missouri let's say when moisture comes in from the Gulf of Mexico.   That moisture is carried along by low level winds and provides the needed moisture.

    They occur with warm to hot surfaces temperatures and cold air aloft.  Both of those conditions cause lifting.  Lifting causes clouds and those clouds turn into thunderstorms and tornadoes when conditions are right.

  3. As the meso cyclone approaches the ground, a visible condensation funnel appears to descend from the base of the storm, often from a rotating wall cloud. As the funnel descends, the rear flank downdraft also reaches the ground, creating a gust front that can cause damage a good distance from the tornado. Usually, the funnel cloud becomes a tornado within minutes of the rear flank downdraft reaching the ground.
