Im really confused. Example fr my question: If Roger Federer was the finalist in last year's Toronto roger's masters and this year he got out in the first round, does he lose 345 points (350-5) or does he get only 5 points (literally speaking 345 less than last year?)

  1. I agree with GSTOKE.

  2. He loses 345 points. If players keep earning points that they don't defend then he would be number 1 for ever!!!

Players only gain points if they do better at a tournament than he or she had done in the previous year. If they equal they don't lose or gain any points and if they do worse then they lose points.

Basically the best way to explain it is as soon as a player enters a tournament. He or she loses the points from last years tournament instantly. They then get back points depending on where they get.

    Hope I helped!!

  3. You are probably confused because he has not lost his points from last year's Canada Masters Series yet.  This is because last year, the Canada Masters Series event started on August 5th, and this year, because of the Olympic Games in Beijing, they started on July 21st.  Then he gains 5 points for now, but will lose last year's 350 points probably on the first week of August, a week from now.  So for now, he gains 5 points, but by next week, he will have a net loss of 345 points.

Just to clarify, Roger Federer actually lost in the Toronto Master's Series in the second round, which would normally allow him to win 35 points, but because he had a first round bye, he did not actually win a match in Toronto, and thus only won 5 points from the event.

EDIT: To respond to booya, I have posted the link to the FAQ about ranking and race points on the official ATP site.  In tournaments where the highest seeds receive a first round bye, they earn the prize money for whichever round they exit in, but must win a match to earn more than 5 ranking points.  Players with a first round bye who lose in the second round receive second round prize money, but only receive first round ranking points.

  4. Really he doesn't gain the 35 points then? I didn't know that. I thought it would still count as a second round loss for those seeded players.
