  1. You extract the DNA of a paricliar gene that you think will help the crops. (this may be from another plant animal bactiria etc)

    You then inject it into the crops DNA, it will then have the characerisitics of the injected gene.

You can use a bacteria (agrobacterium tumefaciens), alter it's genes so it contains the thing you want to add and then allow it to be taken up by the plant (it is a virulent bacteria which naturally causes crown gall disease in trees - plant cancer basically). It will then incorporate it's genes into the plants and give you a transgenic (GM) plant.

    You can also "inject" the genes using a gene gun - the correct term is biolistics.
